The Ultimate Catharsis

“Pigs have flown!  Hell has frozen over!  The Saints are on their way to the Super Bowl!”  These were the words of longtime New Orleans Saints radio broadcaster Jim Henderson after Garrett Hartley’s 40 yard field goal split the uprights in overtime to give the Saints a 31-28 win over the Vikings and, most importantly, their first trip to the Super Bowl.  I was in attendance Sunday night and cannot begin to describe the wave of emotion that was passing through the Superdome... Read More

NFC Championship Preview: New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings

The key to Sunday’s NFC Championship game for the Saints is easy:  protect Drew Brees.  It’s as simple as that.  The Minnesota Vikings make up for their weaknesses in the secondary with heavy pressure, led by All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen.  Jermond Bushrod is going to have to play the game of his short career to keep Allen away from Brees.  I feel this is without a doubt the most critical matchup of the game for the Saints.  The loss of EJ Henderson in the... Read More

Lane Kiffin is the new head coach at USC

I was utterly surprised when I heard the news that Lane Kiffin was hired to replace Pete Carroll at USC. I knew that Kiffin had been on Carroll’s staff both as a recruiting coordinator with Orgeron and as co-offensive coordinators with now Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian. I just didn’t think Lane would leave Tennessee after just one year, and frankly, I thought the buyout after only one year would be financially unattractive even for a private university with... Read More

Saints vs. Cardinals Preview

Having seen the entirety of last Sunday’s thrilling wild card matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals, I had the opportunity to study both teams and preview the upcoming matchup with the New Orleans Saints.  Arizona won the game in overtime, so I will preview important matchups on both sides of the ball and try to break down where each team has advantages.  When the Cardinals have the ball:  Kurt Warner was beyond brilliant on Sunday against the Packers. ... Read More

“Probably Not”

As if college football could be any other way, during the past month we all heard the cries of tyranny to end the BCS.  Last season it was Barack Obama inserting his 2 cents.  This year the story that the wires ran with was of a poll showing college football fans favored 2-1 scrapping the BCS in favor of a playoff system…wow, real investigative polling done there.  At some point, people need to realize that nothing short of an act of Congress will bring about a playoff system... Read More

The Unfortunate Demise of JaMarcus Russell

As readers of this blog have probably figured out, I am a diehard LSU fan.  I always pull for LSU players when they reach the professional level because I feel like they’re still representing my school.  Over the years, we have seen a lot of Tigers make their way to the pros in a number of sports.  Shaquille O’Neal and Kevin Faulk are examples of players who have had successful professional careers while representing their alma matter with pride.  When the Oakland Raiders... Read More

The BCS National Championship

Texas (13-0, 8-0 Big 12) and Alabama (13-0, 8-0 SEC) will meet for the National Championship Thursday night. After Cincinnati embarrassing loss in the Sugar Bowl and TCU’s loss to Boise St., there is no longer any griping about who should be in this game. Boise, while undefeated, was not mentioned as much as the other two schools because their schedule was not as impressive. I’m pretty pumped about this game, and I think it will be a great one just like Texas’... Read More

Orange Bowl Preview

Iowa (10-2) has survived numerous tests to reach this BCS game, winning four of their games by a combined eight points.  They also come in struggling after at 9-0 start, losing two of their last three games.  The Hawkeyes get back quarterback Ricky Stanzi from a severe ankle sprain and face a Georgia Tech defense that has been vulnerable throughout the season, ranking 67th against the run and 54th in total defense.  The real allure of this Orange Bowl is finding out if the... Read More

Fiesta Bowl

The BCS has finally started letting more than one non-BCS team crash the party this year for the first time ever. Granted, they keep letting Notre Dame in with sub-par teams but that is another issue for another day. The Fiesta Bowl matches two undefeated and untied teams with 13-0 Boise State facing off against 12-0 TCU. At first glance, this would appear to be a great matchup, two undefeated teams looking for their chance to prove they can play with the big boys. But upon... Read More

Alamo Bowl Preview

Texas Tech (8-4) once again shined through the air, finishing the season 9nd in scoring offense and 7th in total offense.  As we have found out over the years, the name of the quarterback playing behind center is basically irrelevant; this offense will continue to find guys to step in year after year and execute now former head coach Mike Leach’s unique offense.  The Red Raider defense is led by Brandon Carter, who ranked 2nd in country with 15 sacks on the season.  This... Read More
